Amal, is my name, آمـال is how it looks like in my mother tongue, Arabic. Meaning in English? Hope. Meaning in Spanish? Esperanza I AM COURAGE
My name is Amal, grew up in Saudi Arabia and lived there throughout my childhood, adolescence, and a part of my adulthood. Moved to Canada form the Kingdom of Men in 2013, 24 years old and fully covered from head to toes. Ever since then, I have been trying to find myself as a person, as woman, as an adult. Woman back in Saudi Arabia are treated as miners throughout their entire lives according to the Guardian System which means that women can't pursuit various rights like acquiring education, traveling, or even opening a bank account unless permitted by her male guardian typically a father, husband, brother or even a son. The struggle to find my own journey, away from all the social conditioning and cultural restrictions that are embedded within me, facing them and fighting every day. Today, I am proud to say that I have broken out (or semi broke out) of both my comfort zone formed and influenced by my background’s teachings preferences. I choose what I want to wear, I choose where I want to go, I choose who to live with, I choose... to try and be true to myself, to fulfil my ethical duty to myself to let it be and find it's way, it all ties to my TEDx talk and the reason I am doing the 12 Months challenge. I can can often be found practicing yoga, traveling, camping, painting, reading a book or talking to strangers. , , , I am always seeking opportunities where I can further facilitate space for all people to break through their own boundaries, to connect, and to inspire. I believe that by allowing for continuous learning, just the right encounter will sparks passion and sets individuals of all ages, genders, and sexualities a step closer to their empowered selves and ideal paths. I am always eager to find opportunities to passionately advocate for the equality and empowerment of all people. I am driven by making a difference and empowering women is my mission, ambition, and devotion. I am Amal, I'm-all.

land
NOIDA, Chicago, Toronto...
The three cities where I have spent most of my life. I lived the first 19 years of my life in NOIDA, a suburb of Delhi, in India. The next 19 years were spent in the US living mostly in Chicago. And now, I call Toronto home.
Acknowledging the land where I live now is as important as acknowledging the land of my formative years. India is a country that has been ruled by the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Turks, the Mughals, and the British (and many others!). It is hard to say who were the first settlers but I do know my family has been on the same land for more generations than I can count. I am grateful to have grown up in India.
Acknowledging the land where I lived for the next 19 years of my life is also very important. This is where I developed independent thinking and gained perspective on life. I acknowledge that I was a settler on the unceded land of many Indigenous nations and a firm believer that, that land is Native land - one that I am grateful for having had the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop.
And now, here in Toronto. This is the land that helped me understand my story and connect it to my roots. This is the land that gave me the opportunity to explore, dream, and create. This is the land of the Huron-Wendat, Petun, Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Mississauga of New Credit. I am grateful to have the opportunity to play, dream, work, and sleep on this land.
I don't take my privilege on either of these lands for granted. Rather, I recognize the role they have played in shaping me, and for that, I am forever grateful.
